It's the Dawn of the Female Era, and Awakening is making a stand.
We're here to creatively back the female fighter with quality work and passionate focus. Our quest is to help raise acceptance until it is total,
and gain the respect that female martial artists deserve.
Awakening is mobilizing an army from the female fight scene in a global campaign against breast cancer! This campaign is called “Female Fighters Unite.” Read on to find out how you can easily get involved in this collaborative effort!
The Female Fighters Unite initiative is the effort of both Awakening and MZ & Emmers Sports Bra Auction. The family run organisation of MZ & Emmers has already raised a substantial amount of money towards fighting breast cancer, impressively more than $23 000 since 2010! MZ & Emmers started by getting female athletes from sports like soccer and athletics to donate signed sports bras, which they would then auction. While they’ve had some female fighters involved before, here at Awakening we thought we could really bring the female fight scene together to rally behind this cause. This will be a triple bonus, because not only will this be great publicity for the fighters themselves, but it will be a fantastic way to show the world that female fighters as a collective are truly a force to be reckoned with! Most importantly, the funds raised go towards breast cancer research and support initiatives. Too many people are directly affected by this disease, and many more of us are hurt by the struggle of those around us fighting against this devastating enemy.
The two inaugural Awakening World Muay Thai Titles took place this past Sunday at Fast & Furious 2 in Penzance, Cornwall, UK. The event marked an emotional and historical notch in the Awakening timeline. Not only were there the two first ever Awakening titles up for grabs, it was actually our first co-sanctioned event.
The show itself had sixteen bouts, seven of which were female and it was presented by Touchgloves Gym. We’re not going to review the male fights, so we apologize to those of you that might be interested in those also. What we will say however is that there wasn’t one dull fight and every single fighter, female and male, brought their ‘A game’.
Our 5th Awakening Spotlight is a very special one indeed. We’d like to introduce you to Emma Bayer of MZ & Emmers Sports Bra Auction for Breast Cancer. This is a unique spotlight because she’s NOT a martial artist, but yet has an incredibly inspiring story that Awakening has now become involved in. Did we mention that this little American girl is just six years old!
Most of us have wanted to do more for our favourite charities, but more often than not we allow daily life to prevent us from putting in the time. The story that little Emma has to tell will hopefully prove to us all that getting involved is easy and worthwhile. She has played a large role in raising almost $23,000 for breast cancer in the last two years with her family.
Last night saw a pivotal moment in WMMA, as global eyes watched UFC 157 with bated breath to see how Dana White would showcase the organisations first ever women’s bout. Ronda Rousey vs Liz Carmouche was placed as the main event, and was for the Women’s Bantamweight World Champion title. In the co-main event spot was Lyota Machida vs Dan Henderson. If social media is anything to go by, there was certainly a large proportion of the UFC’s audience that felt it was a joke to have a women’s bout on a UFC card, let alone for it to trump a match up like Machida vs Henderson. It’s worthy of note that the majority of the UFCs audience were not even aware of female fighters before the run up to the event. Those of us that know the women’s MMA scene knew exactly what kind of fight it would be, and that this match was always going to be an incredible fight worthy of the status given to it by the UFC.
We want to thank Sylvia Schiavoni, a Muay Thai Champion from Melbourne, Australia. She recently took the time and effort to write a great little article about Awakening in International Kickboxer magazine. We’ve posted the article below in case you are interested in reading it.
